Joy is not an emotion. Happiness is an emotion, and emotions come and go, never consistent. Joy is a state of being, a resting bed for all of life’s trials. To some the Christian story starts with sin because that is the reason, after all, why we need Jesus. Scriptures tell otherwise though. Genesis does not start with sin, it starts with God’s grandeur and his creation in harmonious communication. Read Genesis up to the Fall. This is where the Christian story starts. Heaven was on earth. The book of Revelation ends with Heaven coming down to earth when all are resurrected, this is the hope of the Christian, to be resurrected in the new earth. The end of Revelation picks up where Genesis 1 and 2 leave off.
How does this relate to Joy?
You must gather your life around the whole narrative of redemption, not merely the Fall. We are not completely sin, we are what sin has broken. The story of our lives is in Genesis 1 and 2 and should end in the last two chapters of Revelation. This is possible only through the Creator, the one who came into the brokenness and left whole, and he intends the same for us.
So remember 1 Peter 4:19, “Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.” -nasb This is vital, God is forming our character, like clay in the Potter’s hands, after all, the only thing we can bring to Heaven is our character…let Him form it.
