Some good Christians do not believe in spiritual warfare, but I believe that Scripture proves its existence and helps us to aid in the battle.
The book of Daniel is commonly referred to on this topic because here it is most clearly seen. The first point to be noted is that Daniel is in prayer and the angel Gabriel comes to him in his prayer saying that “The moment you began praying, a command was given. And now I am here to tell you what it was, for you are very precious to God” (Daniel 9:23). The beauty of this is that a command was given by God the very moment Daniel prayed. This is where it gets interesting. Our prayers have power, they fulfill the will of God. Not to say that God cannot act without our prayers, but I believe he waits for us, his creation, to yearn for him to act, and then he does. Our prayers put God and the host of angels in motion. This is also the scary part. Not only do our prayers put the host of heaven into action, they also put the Fallen on the offensive.
In chapter 1o:12-14, Daniel is confronted by another angel and this one was sent out on the command of God when Daniel began praying 21 days earlier. His reason for being stalled for three weeks is that he had to do battle with “the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia” who blocked his way to Daniel. This is spiritual warfare! The enemy put up defenses and fought the host of heaven from continuing and completing God’s commands that were begun by our prayers. This is worth repeating. God’s plans begin with our prayers. I do not know why he chose it to be this way, but he did. I think the most brilliant part is that the host of heaven was probably losing the battle with the Fallen and they had to bring in Michael. Read it, it is very interesting. Daniel is of course overwhelmed but the angel tells him “Don’t be afraid for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!” (10:19).
What to do about spiritual warfare? Pray, and do not stop. If you don’t have a Bible, get one and read it daily. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 is directed toward spiritual warfare, 1 Peter 5:8, EPHESIANS 6:10-18 is huge do not forget the value of learning about God.
Always remember that “we do not wrestle against the flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
