Two passages to begin with.
Genesis 28.12 (nasb)
He (Jacob) had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
John 1.51 (nasb)
And He (Jesus) said to him (Nathanael) , “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.
Do you see a similarity? Do you think this is on purpose? Remember, there no such things as coincidences! Let’s think about these two simple verses. In Jacob’s dream the ladder is the place at which heaven and earth meet, where God sends His messengers to do His will, the source of light, the source of power, the very thing that ought to strike fear into every person, for every person is a sinner, this very place is opened to Jacob’s eyes. He sees heaven touch earth.
In Jesus’s statement, his promise to Nathanael, is that he, like Jacob, will witness heaven touching earth, but this time there is no mention of a ladder, the angels of God are upon Jesus Christ. Jesus is the moment in time where heaven met earth in an unprecedented way. Not on a ladder, no matter how magnificent that ladder was, it does not compare to the glory of the physical body created by God, for God. Jesus Christ is our ladder.
Read what the narrator recounts of Jacob in Genesis 28.17 (nasb)
He (Jacob) was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
Interesting, right? Jacob was struck with fear looking upon a ladder reaching into heaven, covered with angels, and we have Jesus saying that there is no longer a ladder, there is only him. Be afraid! No where can we find heaven meeting earth, except Jesus Christ.
How does Jacob finish? “This is the gate of heaven” How right that statement is! For Jacob, the only way he could get to heaven was through the ladder, or so he thought. The only opening Jacob saw was the ladder covered in angels. Now, the gate of heaven is none other than Jesus, and this is awesome and terrifying. The only opening to God, is through Jesus. Don’t be fooled by a golden ladder offered in other places, there is no way, except through Jesus.
