So, you have probably witnessed a few skerfuffles on the internet concerning the Supreme Court’s decision on the legalization of gay mirage. And here, as the title suggests, I am not saying anything that others have not said already. The Court’s decision was based on nothing other than subjective notions of personal autonomy, which is always open to redefinition and change. After all, if love is based on emotion, then love always changes. It has been pointed out that the “logic” the Supreme Court has used to make this determination can be the same logic used for legalization and acceptance polyamory, incest, bestiality, and all the rest. You know, “I-don’t-feel-complete-and-loved-unless-I-marry-my-Saint-Bernard” kind of mumbojumbo. Maybe mumbojumbo is too weak, how about trash?
You will also be hearing in the coming weeks, months, years, that if you are a Christian and you are calling sinners to repentance, then you are not loving like Christ. Many preachers will be accused of not knowing the Jesus of the Bible, and these accusations will undoubtedly come from the group who have never actually sat down to read the Bible. They will say things like, “If God exists, he would certainly agree with me.” Again, the failure is to notice that God does exist, and He has spoken, and He tells us that He is not made in our image. There will be screeds and screeches from the liberals such as this, “Your view, you bigoted Christian, is mean-spirited and must be put down. Look at all the people you are hurting. And look how tolerant we are and look how ugly you are!” Then they will grab a big political stick to hit you with, because they are so nice. It certainly does hurt to have sins exposed.
There will also be the argument that we need to love people into the Kingdom. Well, tell that to John the Baptist, or to Paul.
There will also be the argument that two men getting “married” doesn’t affect you directly, so shut yer trap. Well, then there is this from Time magazine. So maybe, my trap doesn’t need to be shut, thank you very much.
Well, I hope you can tell my attitude about all this. Here I am sitting at my desk sipping my coffee, looking out at the vast morass of biological confusion our nation is calling sanity and I think to myself, “Why do the nations rage? And why are the peoples plotting a vain thing?” I am not upset, mind you. I am not hollering at the walls of my office. This time of history, in a way, is an excellent time to be a Christian. The Gospel is the power of God to save, and we have a whole nation standing before us that needs to hear it, from the top all the way down.
It is not the call of the hour for Christians to be cowards, we are already too good at that, and cowards won’t enter the Kingdom (Revelation 21:8). It is the call of the hour, as always and particularly now, to announce that a Man 2,000 years ago died a bloody death, was laid in a tomb, and then came back to life. And this Man’s Word says that if we truly want to live, we must repent of our sins that put Him in the tomb. Take it from the guy who was raised from the dead to tell the rest of us how to live. I think He has some street cred.
You may lose some Facebook friends, your family may get upset with you and make Thanksgiving a little awkward this year, you may even lose your job. But Christians must remember that Christ overcame the world and now He rules and reigns. Your boss is an authority, but not an absolute one. The Supreme Court is an authority, but not an absolute one. These authorities would have us disobey the Absolute Authority, and that is something we cannot do. In fact, we ought to rejoice in the lashings we receive for Him (Acts 5:40-42). It is better to be against the the world and with the King, then against the King and with the rebels…no matter how many funny faces they make you.
Gird your loins, as the men of old would say. And we need some old men willing to gird their loins and lead. Men willing to prepare their fingers for battle. Sharpen their minds on the Word. Establish and build the church on the true faith. The church needs to be a bulwark, a bastion, a new creation in an old world, a light in the darkness. Men and women of the church who stand as a heavenly society, because when the baby killers and the homosexuals realize that their is no life in themselves and all their agendas lead to death, we are to pray that by God’s grace, they would turn to the Lord and Giver of Life.
We have a lot of work to do. If we want the world around us to repent of their sins, we as the church, must show them how. Kill your sin first. Before attacking their sexual perversity, do you look at porn or is there lust lurking inside you? Before attacking their “right to choose” to murder their children, do you have hatred in your heart? Before condemning their sins, we have to ask why we are condemning. Are we doing it because we desperately want to see them repent and receive forgiveness and new life, or is it because we secretly want to see them destroyed? I hope it is the former, and not the latter.
And when you repent, trust the Risen Lord because there He sits on His throne and no one can take Him down. There He rules over all, and not a single rebel in the history of all creation has enough strength to budge Him. No plot, no scheme, no riot, no rebellion, no mutiny, will ever remove Christ from the right hand of God the Father. On this coming Lord’s Day, this is what we celebrate, this is what we rejoice in, this is why we sing, this is why we smile, this is why we shout, “Glory!”
Gladden your heart in the good news: Christ is King still. Now go tell the world.
