Covenant Compendium #2
Genesis 1:2 “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
Here we see the third member of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life (Nicene Creed) taking about the task of glorifying what the Father and Son have made. The adjectives used to describe creation show us its emptiness, shapelessness, and inhabitability. The creation was without form (tohu) and void (bohu). It was formless and what creation needs is structure and order, life, in other words.
God alone brings form out of formlessness. He could certainly have spoken the universe into being with order and structure for culture and life, but He didn’t. He spoke creation into existence formless and empty, so that the glory of the Holy Spirit would be made known. It is the Holy Spirit, the agent of Christ on earth, yea the Vicar of Christ, that prepares a habitation for the creativity of the Father and prepares the Bride for her Husband. God, the Triune God, is the only One who sustains the universe (Hebrews 1:1-4) and He does so for the glorification and exultation of the Godhead.
God brings the lifeless to life, the formless to form, and this is the way He creates and recreates. The Word of the Son and the power of the Spirit are necessary to hold the creation together, or else we would all come undone.The Spirit gives order and government to creation as we will see through the seven days of creation to follow. The Holy Spirit also gives order and government to the New Creation, the church (1 Corinthians 14:26-40 and Colossians 2:5).
There can be no life from the dead without the giving of the Holy Spirit. Individual people, the corporate church, nations and empires, cannot survive without God granting His Holy Spirit to hover over the barrenness of a wasteland that our sin creates. If God removes His Spirit, we will fall into dissolution and become lovers of death; if He gives His Spirit we will be recreated and renewed seeking righteousness and life.
Psalm 104:29-30 “When You hide Your face, they are dismayed;
when You take away their spirit, they die
and return to their dust.
30 When you send forth Your Spirit, they are created,
and You renew the face of the ground.”
God the Father calls the church, God the Son saves the church, and God the Holy Spirit gives life and glory to the church. A Spirit-filled, resurrected new creation is the only means of recreating and glorifying the old cursed creation.
