The Sun Is Up, And It Ain’t Going Down

A snippet of an Advent sermon concerning Malachi 3:18-4:6.

This is good eschatology. What we see is the triumph of the Kingdom of God on earth. What we see is victory.

Jesus is the Sun of Righteousness and He has come to do two things. The coming of the Lord is at once a blessing and curse.

The angels proclaimed good will to men, and Herod murdered children. The Incarnation of Christ is a winnowing fork. For the faithful, it is a joyous reality. The King is here. Morning has dawned!

When the sun is on the horizon there is no way to stop it from rising. Jesus is born, and no one can stop Him.

Upon the righteous, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in His wings. These wings are the protective covering over the people of God and the sun is the light of the world. When the Sun of Righteousness rises up, the church will skip like a calf loosed from its stall and will trample down the wicked.

The saints will be healed, the saints will be forgiven. You live in the light of God, and what this means now is that the saints win.

When the sun breaks the horizon, you can do all you want, but you can never make the sun go back down. You can’t blot it out.

When Jesus was born, the hatred of the world wanted to end Him. Herod sent soldiers to kill all the little boys in Bethlehem. But even an army couldn’t stop the baby Jesus. The sun rose in the sky and grew strong.

The coming of Jesus was not a trial-run. It wasn’t as though God had waited 4,000 years and said, alright, now lets try this. No, this was the plan the whole time. Jesus came to save the world and He will not fail. You cannot blot out the sun.

How is it that God will bring redemption to the nations? Through a baby.

Look , Christians, why are you downcast? The Sun of Righteousness is high in the sky. Paganism is on the run. Men, women, and children across the globe are converting to Christ. The world is being filled with the knowledge of Him. Jesus cannot lose.

Look at what the sun does. The sun either scorches, or it heals. The news about Jesus will either bring condemnation or redemption. You will either burn like chaff, or you will be refined in fire.

The birth of Jesus is the beginning of the world being set on fire, and the righteous will go out skipping like calves loosed from a stall. We go out like calves skipping about in the glorious light of the day and we trample under our feet the wickedness of the world.

It is joy, joy in Christ, joy in the Incarnate Eternal Word of God who lived, died, and was resurrected, that will conquer the world. It is this kind of faith that cannot be conquered, but conquers.

Why do you think it is that the rampant secularism surrounding us is trying to get everyone to say “Happy Holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas”? Saying Merry Christmas is scattering darkness. Why is it that we decorate everything in lights? Because the Light of the world has come.

The best way for you, Christian, to conquer the world, the sin in your own hearts, the animosity in your home, the darkness of secularism, is to skip like a calf loosed from bonds. To wake up everyday knowing that the Sun is up and no one can stop the light of Christ from redeeming the world.

Christ has come to give light to all men. He is the morning-star that has arisen in our hearts. It is by His righteousness that we are healed. The world is no longer in darkness because Christ was born, lived a perfect life, died on a cross so you can die to your sins, and was raised from the dead for your resurrection. This, family, is joy unspeakable.

In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
